got iPhone?

introducing iPhone...

iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone.

interested? I surely am..

Phil. 102: Introduction to Philosophical Inquiry
Plato, "Are Human Beings Selfish?"

1. What is the nature of justice and how did it originate?
2. Why do human (beings) practice justice?
3. Why does the just person as well as the unjust (person) believe that wrongdoing pays better?

1. What is the nature of justice and how did it originate?

Glaucon says that if you look at what people really are, then you will see that they believe to do wrong is desirable and to suffer wrong is undesirable. Since we do not want to suffer wrong, we compromise with others and form a compact (a social contract) not to harm each other. These agreements are the origination of justice in society.

2. Why do human (beings) practice justice?

Human beings practice justice in order to avoid the harm that would come to them if they disobeyed the laws of the society. Thus, it is in our self-interest to obey the law because we fear the consequences if we were to get caught disobeying the law.

Glaucon's account is in accordance with the cluster of ethical theories such as psychological and ethical egoism, psychological and ethical hedonism, and ethical relativism. Essentially, he believes all persons are selfish, self-interested, and egoistic.

3. Why does the just person as well as the unjust (person) believe that wrongdoing pays better?

Glaucon proposes a mind-experiment: the myth of the magic ring of Gyges. Note how his account relates to the ad populum fallacy.

If anyone had a ring that would make him invisible, then that person would be a fool not to use it for personal advantage. Whether one were just or unjust, with such a ring, that person could do almost anything he wanted without fear of being caught. Both the unjust and the just person would use its magic powers because one would be a fool not to do what personally pays him much better.

It is important to notice that in this essay from the Republic, Plato is using Glaucon's account as a challenge for Socrates to overcome.

January '07 Post Review

Back in Brunei after a week's worth of mind boggling geomechanics and sand control fundamentals! Wohoo.. felt like being in a lecture hall again but 10x worse considering the fact that its from 8-5 and there's only a few of us, so sleeping is definitely a no no or you'll get a spanked in the butt.. hmmmm .. Excitement is gone this time around in KL, not as excited and can't-wait-to-do-this-and-that-activities wasn't as fun as before. Gotta find other things to do lah.. Friends busy, schedules changed, etc. Life's changing.. I'm changing.. Tennis lessons anyone?

But all in all time wasn't realy wasted towards the last couple of nights. Was definitely in a pool of crowd, strolling at the "beach" LOL.. Ansari, you are the BOMB!! At least I whipped your ass the last time we played. You've got a competitor now haven't you?? heheh..

Aus Open's over, Serena, you deserve to win against the ever grunting Sharapova.. Shh already!!.. Federer is untouchable! Can you believe he's achieved so much for the past few years no one can even get close to him? He has played exceptionally good if not the best tennis EVER, especially in big matches! Didn't drop a set this time around, magnificent returns every single one of them. I wonder what miracle he can conjure next time? Winning all grand slams for the next 10 years? 4 more grand slams to go before he gets to Pete Sampras' record then it'll be forever before someone else can actually surpass him because he'll still be playing until he's 80! probably his own son eh? That's something he's probably thinking at the moment. Neah, probably thinking about his skiing trip back home.

Back to work babe.. Got an EOWR to finish.. yuck!

Bye babe..
